With 20 years of experience in sourcing capital for commercial real estate deals, Hal Kempson, First Vice President at CBRE, knows a thing or two about the mortgage banking industry. In fact, one of his self-proclaimed “coolest deals” was sourcing bridge financing for the EpiCentre. Hal was born in Asheville, NC and is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. When talking about leadership, Hal’s advice is to listen, work hard and ask questions. When asked who he most admires, Hal answered Dean Smith, former UNC Chapel Hill basketball coach, as he stood up for what he believed in.
“The membership of ULI is made up of people from the entire spectrum of real estate development. They’re trying to make sure land use and developments are done in a sensible, responsible manner.” He goes on to say, “The people I’ve met and the things I have learned” are the key reasons for being involved in ULI. He serves on the ULI Charlotte Advisory Board, chairs the Regional Development and Programs Committee, and is a driving force behind bringing quality programs, such as the Carolinas’ Meeting (just recently held in Raleigh, NC), to North Carolina.
When not working or volunteering for ULI, Hal’s favorite cause to support is the YMCA. He is father to daughter Parker and husband to Taryn. He loves to road and mountain bike, snow ski, do yoga, enjoy food, and help Mac’s Speed Shop grow. One goal he has yet to achieve is raising his daughter to fulfill her goals, which won’t be for a few years as she is just two-years old. Good luck Hal.
