The availability of good schools may be the most important factor in spurring economic development. But while urban planners, mayors and county commissioners are frequently viewed as the civic leaders tasked with advancing economic development, a separate branch of local government, the school board, controls the most important economic development lever.
Today, charter schools, opportunity scholarships, homeschooling, and other “school choice” programs are growing rapidly around the country, and real estate developers and urban planners are beginning to see these innovations as potential tools to spark growth in residential and commercial construction and to alleviate urban blight.
Dr. Bartley Danielsen of North Carolina State University is one of the world’s leading authorities on how school choice impacts economic vitality and urban sprawl. He will share his research about how these programs impact local economies, property values, and family relocation patterns.
