ULI Alabama Presents: Southern States Exchange 2018
February 21, 2018
Birmingham has been experiencing a revival in its downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. Join us as we explore the city and learn more about this renaissance, including the context, development tools, and results. We will explore the impacts of shifting demographics, a desire for walkable neighborhoods, and environmentally sustainable development, all of which have contributed to an exciting and robust transformation of this iconic Southeast city.
The event will begin at 1PM, Thursday March 1st, at Pepper Place, the focal point of Birmingham’s Lakeview Design District and home of The Market at Pepper Place, a popular local weekend farmers market. The program will begin with a welcome message from Christopher Coes, Director of LOCUS: Responsible Real Estate Developers and Investors. Attendees will then enjoy a walking tour of the new Rotary Trail and Railroad Park, followed by a tour of the new Regions Field, home of the Birmingham Barons. The next stop will be Sloss Furnaces, a National Historic Monument and one of Birmingham’s first Iron Furnaces. We’ll finish the day’s tour in Avondale, an urban neighborhood where public private partnerships have catalyzed a thriving hub of local food, beverage and entertainment options. Dinner will be served at Avondale Brewing Company, an early adopter that helped to start the momentum in Avondale. After dinner attendees will return to Pepper Place and the Tutwiler Hotel.
Friday’s program will begin at 8 AM with a city overview at the historic Vulcan Park and Museum, followed by a tour of development at University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB). After visiting the newly renovated Thomas Jefferson Tower, attendees will participate in a walking tour of Downtown Birmingham, meeting experts from across the city who are responsible for more than $1 billion in investments in the central downtown and adjacent neighborhoods. The tour will have a focus on the impact of historic tax credits on adaptive reuse and revitalization. Our final luncheon, which will also be open to local ULI members, will be held in the historic Florentine Building. At the luncheon we will discuss Birmingham’s next chapter and explore the next steps for the city and the region.
