Member Profile: T.B. “Skeet” Harris Jr.

Ask T.B. “Skeet” Harris Jr. how long he’s been in the real estate business, and he’ll likely answer “forever.” It may well seem that way given all the change in the local market that the Charlotte native has witnessed. Skeet got into the business in 1973, shortly after graduating from Duke University. He went out on his own six years later to form T.B. Harris Jr. & Associates Inc.

The firm offers a variety of services, including appraisals, consulting on development and sales, tax-appeal advice and real estate-related litigation. The most satisfying part of the job, he says simply, is “working on solutions for clients in need.” His expertise and longevity in the Charlotte market has led to an enviable client base, including Bank of America, Duke Energy, Wells Fargo and state and local governments.

Skeet earns and retains business by exhibiting drive and determination in his leadership style. He also believes in demonstrating commitment to a client’s project. “Don’t tell someone you did not have time or you did your best,” he advises. Not having time tells clients that you did not have time for them. “And when we say we did our best, “isn’t there always just a little something extra we might have done?”

That spirit of commitment also shows in Skeet’s involvement with ULI –– he served as ULI Charlotte chair from 2006 to 2008. Why is he a member? “So I can soak up the thoughts, ideas and comments from all those attending the first-class events they offer,” he says.

He aspires to learn more about and help solve the challenges of addressing work force and low-income housing needs in Charlotte.

Away from work, he enjoys sailing and “doing nothing” in Beaufort, S.C. Skeet no doubt has plenty of company at the beach –– he and his wife, Anne, have four sons and two daughters. In case the coast of South Carolina isn’t relaxing enough, Skeet enjoys getting away to uninhabited islands in the Exuma district of the Bahamas.

“Retirement and more time with the family” are his current unmet goals.
