Loyalty may be the defining characteristic of Dave Chandler’s life. For instance, he has worked in finance at Faison since 1992. He’s been married to his wife, Deb, for 32 years. And, growing up in Madison, Wisc., he chose to earn both his undergraduate and master’s degrees at the city’s famed state university.
Dave cites his firm’s loyalty to ULI to explain why he’s part of the organization. “Our firm has a long history of involvement that began with (founder) Henry Faison.” His training in finance served him well as ULI Charlotte’s treasurer. ULI offers a “great cause, purpose and network base,” he adds.
At Faison, Dave is responsible for securing the substantial sums required for its development projects, which lately have centered on multifamily housing. He’s credited with placing short- and long-term debt of more than $2 billion, as well as structuring equity investments. Prior to Faison, he served as a trust investment officer and asset manager at Wachovia Bank in Winston-Salem. He also worked at Principal Financial Group in Des Moines, where he handled debt financing.
The most satisfying part of his job is seeing projects reach completion and work successfully. Dave is looking forward to tagging the Chadbourn Mill project with that label. Acquired in late 2015, the industrial site is being converted into office space and a restaurant adjacent to the light-rail line near NoDa. “We are still working on it!” he says.
Dave says patience and tolerance are the leadership traits he brings to bear to his work. His career advice is straightforward: It never hurts to get to work early. As a member of Clemson University’s Advancement Board for Real Estate Development, he shares his insights with students earning a master’s in the program.
He remains a loyal Packer fan, and says his favorite quotes are anything by legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi. Classic cars are Dave’s hobby, and Savannah, Ga., is his favorite vacation spot. Seeing more of our national parks is high on his bucket list.
